Why be sun safe?
Australia geographically is based very close to the earth's equator making it one of the hottest and driest climates on the planet. With that in mind, we have a culture that endures the outdoor lifestyle, we base leisure around our picturesque scenery which means getting out and about amongst the sun. For these reasons, as individuals we need to do our part to ensure our health and wellbeing does not become affected.
Tanning
Fifty per cent of Australian teens believe a tan looks healthy.
Are you a tan-o-rexic, out baking once a week or even once a month? ...Well experts say that no matter what intensity and frequency you tan, you are at risk of skin cancer!
A tan is a sign that you have been exposed to enough UV radiation to damage your skin. This will eventually cause loss of elasticity (wrinkles), sagging, yellowish discolouration and even brown patches to appear on your skin. Gross much?
Direct sun exposure not only increases your risk of developing skin cancer it can really have effect on you internally. It may cause headaches, dehydration and lack of energy.
Solariums
Solariums otherwise known as tanning beds are a sure fire way to increase your risk of skin cancer. According to the Cancer Council, solariums emit UVA and UVB light which are known as prevalent causes of cancer.
Fake Tans
The healthiest way to create that flawless summer glow. With its only risk being that you may turn orange if not applied correctly, a fake tan is your best bet for an attractive and sun-free glow this summer.
